There's no particular trick to opening the 5 lb cans. They're designed to be opened by most standard can openers. Some do work better than others. Sometimes it's also easier to open the can from the bottom.
You can also use an electric can opener if you hang the can off the edge of the counter - you have to gently support the can from underneath to keep it level and to keep it from toppling off the counter.
