The preferred method of practice outlined below is used for most of our cover crop options including our excellent cover crop mix. If the cover crops are not mowed or tilled into the soil they will still complete their life cycle. Our garden cover crop mix includes both hardy grains and hardy legumes, as well daikon radish, mustard, and forage collards.🌿
We suggest planting in the fall after the weather starts to cool off. Where we are, in Salt Lake City that time is September and October. Irrigate as needed. You can even plant into November, but not all of the mix would come up then. Some of the crops will simply lay dormant and come up next spring. Next, when its 2-3 weeks before you want to plant your main crop or your garden, you mow, cut and/or till the cover crop into the soil. In a “no-till” method you simply mow or cut the growth down and let it lay on the surface and plant through it like a mulch. 🌾
