How long will seeds last?

The key to saving seeds is to keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place. Regardless of what type of seed you are storing, you will want to make sure they are completely dry. Any moisture left will eventually lead to molding and unviable seed. Some people like to store their seeds with silica gel desiccant or oxygen absorber packets to prevent mold problems. Some seeds can remain viable in storage for several years if stored in low humidity and low temperature (42°F/15°C) conditions. Storing seeds in an airtight container is also important as it keeps excess oxygen, pests, and potential contaminants out of the seed. There are 4 main causes of seed degradation: Moisture, light, temperature, and pests. If you can control those variables you will maximize your seed's germination life.
